Winter Goodwill Games Announce Sponsorship Commitments
Nine Top Companies on Board for First-Ever Winter Goodwill Games
The Goodwill Games today announced nine sponsors for the first-ever Winter Goodwill Games. The announced sponsors---- -- Chevy Truck, Circuit City, Gillette, INVESCO Mutual Funds and A I M Distributors, Inc., Isuzu, Johnson & Johnson, Lincoln Financial, PowerBar and Quizno's -- will be incorporated into nearly 4,000 commercial spots, an extensive national print campaign and an on-site signage program in Lake Placid. Johnson & Johnson and Gillette are return sponsors from the 1998 Goodwill Games.
The campaign highlights not only the sponsors of the first-ever Winter Goodwill Games, but also seven elite athletes who will be competing in the Games. The Winter Goodwill Games, to air on TNT, will be held in Lake Placid, New York, from February 17-20 (with an Opening Celebration on the 16th), and will feature 11 winter sports.
The Goodwill Games, with the support of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. and parent company Time Warner Inc., offer sponsors a unique opportunity for cross-promotional involvement by integrating them into all elements of the print, broadcast and presence campaigns. Turner Sports Sales signs sponsors according to a pre-established list of sponsor categories, guaranteeing that there are no competing sponsors.
'Because Turner Broadcasting owns and operates the Goodwill Games, we have control of all marketing and sponsorship opportunities associated with the event,' said Chris Eames, Turner Sports Sales vice president. 'Our goal is to make our sponsors appear as a seamless extension of the Games through our various media and on-site opportunities.'
The far-reaching advertising campaign will include nearly 4,000 commercial spots on 13 Turner Broadcasting networks (six domestic and seven international), which will begin to air in early December and run through the Games. Each of these spots will be tagged with appropriate sponsor branding. The Turner networks airing the spots include TNT, TBS Superstation, CNN, CNN Headline News, Airport Network and CNN/Sports Illustrated.
In addition, Goodwill Games promotions will appear on the TV Guide Channel, Delta In-Flights nationally and various cable and radio outlets in 11 key markets: New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Boston, Seattle, Detroit, Atlanta, Minneapolis and Washington, D.C. A comprehensive print and outdoor campaign will accompany the broadcast promotion. National print placements will appear in Time Warner publications, including People and Sports Illustrated as well as newspapers and outdoor billboards in the 11 key markets. Additionally, Time Warner Cable affiliates across the country will be involved in national promotions leading up to the Games. The total value of the advertising campaign exceeds $10 million.
The athletes featured in the campaign, each champions in their respective disciplines, are Oksana Baiul, Olympic gold medalist, figure skating; Chad Fleisher, two-time Olympian and reigning U.S. downhill champion; Ann Battelle, three-time Olympian and World Cup moguls champion; Jim Shea, 1999 Skeleton World Champion; Chris Thorpe and Gordy Sheer, Olympic Silver Medalists, luge; and Tricia Byrnes, 1999 Snowboard Halfpipe World Champion. All featured athletes will be competing in the first-ever Winter Goodwill Games. Olympic champion Dan Jansen, who will serve as a commentator for TNT, will also be featured in the broadcast portion of the campaign.
The Goodwill Games and their partners at ORDA (the Olympic Regional Development Authority) are organizing the Games. ORDA was established in 1981 under legislation enacted by the State of New York to operate, maintain and promote the 1980 Winter Olympic facilities in the Lake Placid region.

In addition to the Winter Goodwill Games, plans are underway for the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia. TNT is the host network for both events.
