World Anti-Doping Agency Gets 40 Research Proposals
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) received 40 applications from 17 different countries, in response to an open invitation for research proposals.
During its last meeting in Oslo, Norway, in November 2000, the WADA Foundation Board agreed to dedicate 5 million US dollars of its total 14.3 million US dollars budget, to research initiatives in support of its Health, Medical and Research Committee recommendations. All invitations for application submissions were requested by April 1st, 2001.
WADA received 40 quality proposals in three priority research areas identified by the Health, Medical and Research Committee in the field on anti-doping, as follows:
I. Factors regulating growth enhancement
a) Development of detection methods for growth hormone and insulin like growth factors
b) Physiology effects when using such substances.
II. Compounds enhancing the oxygen carrying capacities of the blood, and especially development of detection methods for the use of erythropoietin (EPO), haemoglobin substitutes and plasma volume expanders.
III. Steroids
a) Further development of detection methods for commonly used 'ordinary' steroids
b) Metabolism and detection of precursors of steroid hormones
c) Physiology of using these hormones
d) Detection methods for creatine
e) Behavioral changes using these hormones
'The total of all submissions this year amounted to 12 million US dollars, which demonstrated the huge commitment and interest within the research community on these important issues', declared Richard W. Pound, Q.C., Chairman of the WADA Board.
An open invitation for submission was advertised in several specialized magazines and on the WADA website in early January 2001. The majority of the responses came from Germany, Australia, United States, China and the United Kingdom.
All submitted projects will be peer reviewed and evaluated by independent, external expert panels and the Health, Medical and Research Committee will make recommendations to the WADA Executive Committee. The decisions will be confirmed in June and in August 2001.
