World Class Athletics Returns To London
Today it has been confirmed that the 1999 British Grand Prix - the premiere athletics meeting in the UK- will be staged at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on Saturday 7th August. It heralds a return of world class athletics to London and represents a significant move in the sport's efforts to gain Golden League status for the Grand Prix and attract major championships to London.
David Moorcroft, Chief Executive of UK Athletics, said, 'The prospect of hosting the Grand Prix at Crystal Palace is very exciting. It is important that we provide excellent competition at all levels including, importantly, the promotion of high quality world class events. We are delighted to be back in the capital city and hope these efforts culminate ultimately in a World Athletics Championships in London.'
'This move could prove significant in achieving future Golden League status for the British Grand Prix', said Alan Pascoe, Group Chairman of Fast Track, the commercial arm of UK Athletics. 'We look forward to attracting a host of world class athletics to Crystal Palace and staging a fantastic meeting. The British Grand Prix will act as one of the final opportunities for our leading athletes to prepare for the World Championships in Seville later in the month.'
Last year's British Grand Prix was staged at Sheffield's Don Valley stadium and everyone involved in the sport has made it clear that the Sheffield venue is still regarded as an important facility for the future. 'The Don Valley stadium, with its magnificent facilities, remains integral to the future of British athletics. We would like to return to Sheffield for a major meeting next summer', Pascoe confirmed.
