World Cup Jumping: Situation In The League

There are 14 Leagues in the FEI World Cup Jumping. Ten of them have ended their qualifications: Central Asia, Central Europe, South East Asia, Canada, South America (Southern Part), South Africa, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, USA West Coast. Two Leagues are still going: USA East Coast and Western Europe. Two Leagues had to be cancelled for economical reasons: Mexico, South America (Northern Part) THE FOLLOWING NINE LEAGUES HAVE ENDED THEIR QUALIFICATIONS: CENTRAL EUROPEAN LEAGUE (2 QUALIFIED) 141 riders competed in the 14 competitions of the Central European League 1999 / 2000. Two events: Cherniakovsk in the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad and Prag had to be cancelled for economical reasons. New Zealand born Samantha Mc Intosh, now riding for Bulgaria, won the League, ahead of Guntars Silins of Latvia. Both intend to compete in Las Vegas. Qualified horses - Samantha Mc Intosh BUL Royal Discovery - Guntars Silins LAT Salana Radiant 1st Reserve : Radu Ilioi ROM Agresor de Florin 2nd Reserve : Grzegorz Kubiak POL Orkisz Checker CANADIAN LEAGUE (3 QUALIFIED) The World Cup competition at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair closed the Canadian League. Six competitions were held. The League winner, for the second time after 1993 / 94, is Beth Underhill. Also qualified for the Final are two times World Cup champion Ian Millar and 23 year old Ainsley Vince. Ian Millar, Ainsley Vince and the World Cup Champion of 1984, Mario Deslauriers, will compete in Las Vegas. - Beth Underhill CAN Altair - Ian Millar CAN Ivar, Play it Again, Future Folly - Ainsley Vince CAN Catch 22 1st Reserve : Mario Deslauriers CAN Beach Game, Le Madro 2nd Reserve : Amy Millar CAN Mont Cenis, Manhattan SOUTH EAST ASIAN LEAGUE (1 QUALIFIED) Because of the outbreak of the Japanese Encephalitis and Hendra like epidemic at Malaysian Pig farms, the movement of horses in South East Asia was severely affected. All World Cup competitions had to be held in and around the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. 10 Riders from 3 countries participated. Endaryanto Bambang of Indonesia is the League winner and qualified for the Final. - Endaryanto Bambang INA Gallypoli Reserve : Helena Gabrielsson SWE West Side Story CENTRAL ASIAN LEAGUE (1 QUALIFIED) For the first time a Central Asian League could be organised, with competitions in Kyrgyzstan (Biskek), Kazakhstan (Almaty) and Uzbekistan (Tashkent) 19 riders competed and Saken Suranchinov of Kazakhstan was the League winner. The runner-up, Pioter Solovyov, intends to compete in Las Vegas. Saken Suranchinov KAZ Man Reserve : Pioter Solovyov KAZ Tubina SOUTH AMERICAN LEAGUE - SOUTHERN PART (2 QUALIFIED) There were 3 competitions in Brazil (Porto Alegre, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo) and four in Argentina (all in Buenos Aires, organised in four different Clubs) Belo Horizonte was cancelled and Santiago de Chile was not held. 69 riders from 5 nations competed. The League win went to Martin Dopazo of Argentina, ahead of Bernardo Cardoso Resendes Alves of Brazil. The 3rd placed Geraldo Gomes de Lemos intends to compete in Las Vegas. - Martin Dopazo ARG El Capricho Calvaro - Bernardo C. Resendes Alves BRA Mariano do Amir, Visa Tucu Tucu 1st Reserve: Geraldo G. de Lemos BRA Victor 2nd Reserve : Joaquim Larrain CHI Jeggamaster Sta Monica, Mainleap SOUTH AFRICAN LEAGUE (1 QUALIFIED) 5 competitions were held in South Africa and 26 riders, all South Africans, competed. Barry Taylor, already the League winner in the 1997 / 98 season, won the League, ahead of Renier van der Westhuizen. With the problems of African Horse sickness still there, he will not compete in Las Vegas - Barry Taylor RSA Checkpoint, Sunday's Eagle Reserve : Renier van der Westhuizen RSA Military Mouse JAPAN LEAGUE (1 QUALIFIED) 6 competitions were held in the Japan League. 24 Japanese riders competed. Taizo Sugitani, the son of an Olympic rider, won the League with 40 points ahead of Seiji Ninomiya and Hidehiko Tukuda, both with 35 points. Sugitani intends to compete in Las Vegas. - Taizo Sugitani JPN Island Love Reserve : Hidehiko Tukuda JPN The Rusty AUSTRALIAN LEAGUE (2 QUALIFIED) 18 Competitions were held in the Australian League, 46 riders competed including Miki Cojuangco from the Philippines. Gavin Chester, who won four of the competitions, was the League winner, ahead of Andrew Inglis, Chris Chugg and Vicki Roycroft. Gavin Chester, who competed in the 1983 Final in Vienna, intends to compete in Las Vegas. - Gavin Chester AUS Another Flood - Andrew Inglis AUS Guesswork 1st Reserve: Chris Chugg AUS Sky High, Diamond B. Ego 2nd Reserve: Vicki Roycroft AUS Loves a Challenge, Coalminer, Long Tally Sally NEW ZEALAND LEAGUE (1 QUALIFIED) John Cottle, who won 6 of the 10 competitions in the New Zealand League and placed 2nd three times (he did only competed in 9 of the 10 competitions) clearly won, for the 5th times in a row, the New Zealand League. He will, however, not compete in the Final in Las Vegas. - John Cottle NZL Jeep Super Moth Reserve: Maurice Beatson NZL Duty free USA WEST COAST LEAGUE (3 + 1 QUALIFIED) 53 riders competed in the 8 Competitions of the USA West Coast League. The last of the four Indio events was held on 12 March 2000. The top 3 riders qualify for the Las Vegas Final. Since the USA as host country may have two wild cards, one will be from the East Coast League, the other from the West Coast League. - Richard Spooner USA Kirk, Prestige Southshore, Robinson, Bradford - Hap Hansen USA Maloubet, Roxett - Misti Cassar USA Beach Girl, Aktiv, Le Cordial Wild Card Dick Carvin USA Sam Malone, Clover Heights 1st Reserve : Francie Steinwell - Carvin USA Sam Malone, Moonstar, Nordic 2nd Reserve : Nicole Shahinian-Simpson USA Cirka Z, Jojo, Cayenne THE SITUATION IN THE OTHER LEAGUES WESTERN EUROPEAN LEAGUE (18 TO QUALIFY) 13 of the 15 competitions have been held. Still to come in March and April 2000 are 's-Hertogenbosch and G÷teborg. Thomas Velin, John Whitaker and Jeroen Dubbeldam with 65, 64 and 63 points are the leaders, ahead of Helena Weinberg, Ludo Philippaerts, Ludger Beerbaum, Otto Becker, Peter Charles and Ralf Schneider, all with 50 or more points. USA EAST COAST LEAGUE (7+ 1 TO QUALIFY) Seven of the 10 competitions have been held. Still to come are three events in Palm Beach and Tampa, Florida. Leslie Howard is in the lead with 64 points ahead of Alison Firestone who earned some of her points in the Western European League and Donald Cheska, with 56 points each.
