World First at the Hopman Cup
This year’s Hyundai Hopman Cup Mixed Teams Championship in Perth will be the world's first elite level tennis tournament to formally utilise the revolutionary tennis technology Hawk-Eye Officiating during matches.
The Hyundai Hopman Cup is an official International Tennis Federation (ITF) event, with the matches officially recorded on player head to head records. The event, which gets underway on 30 December, features 8 of the world`s top 30 players including 4 Grand Slam singles winners.
The ITF has agreed that Hawk-Eye Officiating can now be used in this official competition with the system allowing players to challenge point ending line calls similar to the case at clay court tournaments.
"This result reflects the hard work put in by both Hawk-Eye and our committee over the past year" said Dr Stuart Miller, the ITF Technical Manager.
The technology, which uses cameras to track the ball’s trajectory and sends information to a virtual reality machine, has been tested at Grand Slam championships and ATP Tennis Masters Series and was also shadow tested at the last Hopman Cup.
Paul Hawkins, founder of the Hawk-Eye system said: “Calling lines is a tough job – everyone wants it to be left to the ability of the players to decide the outcome of a match and now Hawk-Eye can help make that happen.”
Tournament Director Paul McNamee said "The Hopman Cup has always been an innovative tournament. It was the first elite level event to introduce electronic linecalling 12 years ago and now is the first to introduce this latest technological advance.
"There`s no doubt the likes of Safin, Gaudio, Johansson and Kuznetsova, who`ve won at the ultimate level, will ensure the sternest of examination of this groundbreaking initiative. The sport is ready for this innovation, and we`re confident Hawk-Eye is ready too. Bring it On!"
Large video screens at the end of the court will display the outcome direct to the spectators in the Dome, which all add another exciting dimension to being there live!
The Hawk-Eye system has been in use for three years, but only as a guide to television viewers and as an analytical tool for commentators and will again be part of the ABC Television coverage of Hyundai Hopman Cup XVIII.
Hyundai Hopman Cup XVIII starts on 30 December 2005 and tickets can be purchased through BOCS Ticketing. The Hyundai Hopman Cup is the lead off tournament on the Road to the Australian Open.
