By Brian Martin Rasmussen, Press Manager for the WTF Taekwondo World Championships 2009

The registration deadline for the WTF Taekwondo World Championships 2009 has expired by now and the official number of participants is 950 athletes from 135 nations. The list of participants may change only slightly up until 30 September.

Both the big, traditional taekwondo nations such as Korea, Iran, Spain and Mexico are participating but also countries such as Lesotho, Madagascar, Samoa and Cap Verde are registered. Thus, all parts of the world is represented in the WTF Taekwondo World Championships 2009 in week 42 in the Ballerup Super Arena.

Positive for the Dansk taekwondo sport
The opening fight is scheduled on 14 October and on the very same day three world champions in three different weight classes can raise their arms in triumph.

After four more competition days, Sunday 18 October rounds off the event. In total, 16 world champions are in for medals; eight female and eight male athletes in eight different weight classes.

President of the Danish Taekwondo Federation, Søren Holmgård Knudsen, says: “It means extremely much to the taekwondo sport in Denmark and for us as organisers that we can present as many athletes and nations as is the case at the WTF Taekwondo World Championships 2009. It demonstrates the enormous popularity that taekwondo is enjoying globally.

Danish Year of Sport 2009
In 2009 more than 50 major international sports events are taking place all over Denmark, including the IOC Olympic Session and the Olympic Congress. The World Taekwondo Championships, the UEFA Congress, the World Wrestling Championships and the World Men’s Team Squash Championships are also among the many events taking place in Denmark.

Due to the many events the Danish Government has appointed the year 2009 as the Danish Year of Sport. The Year of Sport is part of a national effort to realise a vision of the Danish Government: to place Denmark firmly as one of Europe’s leading hosts of major international sports events and congresses.
