The best Christmas gift in 2017: LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships in Copenhagen

Swimming - 03 Nov 2016

Wrap up or wrap in? Paulo Frischknecht, the CEO of LEN, talked about Christmas gifts when he wrapped up the impressions of the site visit in Copenhagen. The capital of Denmark will host the next major LEN event, the European Short Course Swimming Championships 2017. An aquatic show wrapped in as the best gift we could offer.

“It’s quite easy to describe it in one single word: Impressive! You are seemingly quite ready to host the next major LEN event. It will be our biggest event from now and till the end of 2017,” said Paulo Frischknecht, CEO, LEN, during his site visit at the new state of the art multipurpose arena, Royal Arena, in Copenhagen. In just a little more than a year this arena will transform into a genuine arena with a special pulse of swimming at the LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships in December 2017. This event will be the next major LEN event and LEN has its focus set on the next year of preparations.

The arena is still under construction, and the LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships will be the very first sporting event in the arena, which is located in Copenhagen.

Denmark has a strong tradition in hosting major sporting events and has previously hosted the European Short Course Championships in 2013 in a city called Herning.

“The atmosphere was unique in 2013 in Herning when Denmark hosted the LEN Short Course Swimming Championships,” recalls Frischknecht. “With this arena we have doubled the capacity, the arena is in the capital of Denmark and we have extended the event to five competition days. I believe that in 2017 just before Christmas this is the best gift that we could – you could -offer to the city of Copenhagen – another aquatic show. A very good aquatic show!”

Pia Holmen, CEO of the Danish Swimming Federation, is also very pleased with the progression of the arena and with the preparations of the event: “We will showcase world class swimming in this world class multipurpose arena as the first ever sporting event in the arena. We will ride the waves of experiences from 2013 and add new dimensions to the event together with our partners. The arena is giant, compact and perfect for spectator involvement and engagement. The swimmers couldn’t dream of a better set-up.”

And she picks up the phrasing of her colleague in LEN: “The LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships next December will be our gift to European and Danish swimming.”
