AIBA partners with Sportcal for GSI Event Study on AIBA World Boxing Championships 2017

Boxing - 23 Mar 2017

Sportcal will conduct an Advanced GSI Event Study on the AIBA World Boxing Championships 2017 taking place in Hamburg, Germany, later this year.

AIBA, the world governing body for the sport of boxing, has signed a one-year agreement for Sportcal to undertake an Advanced GSI Event Study on the AIBA World Boxing Championships taking place in Hamburg, Germany, from 25 August to 3 September this year.

The most prestigious boxing event of the year, it will once again feature the world’s top 280 athletes across ten weight categories, with just a single qualification route available to them - one of five Continental Championships; Africa, The Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania.

Historically one of boxing’s strongest nations, Germany will host the World Championships for the first time since Berlin 1995, once again providing the country’s legion of fans with the chance to see the world’s best boxers in action.

AIBA is keen to obtain a holistic view of the various impacts generated by their World Championships in Hamburg, and Sportcal will be undertaking an advanced analysis across all the main pillars of the GSI Event Study including:  economic; tourism; financial; technology; media; social media; sponsorship; sporting; social; environmental and legacy plus key data comparisons against similar events.

The Advanced Study will provide a better understanding of the overall impact of the AIBA World Boxing Championships, for AIBA, all key stakeholders and for potential future event hosts.

AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu commented: "To become AIBA World Champion is the dream of every boxer, and to be able to perform on the biggest stage in a nation such as Germany, with its rich sporting tradition and experience of hosting the world’s greatest sporting events, enriches the occasion. We very much look forward to working with Sportcal to better understand the different impacts of our flagship event, and we are confident that it will help us expand boxing internationally."

Sportcal will work in collaboration with key stakeholders involved in staging the event, including AIBA; the event organisers; host city; government authorities; sponsors; broadcasters and any third party organisations to gather, assimilate, analyse and compare the data and narrative around this event.

Mike Laflin, CEO and Founder of Sportcal and the GSI Project, stated:

"We are delighted to be working with AIBA to help them understand the true impact of their Boxing World Championships in Hamburg this year.  This study will help show how the World Championships delivers a broad range of holistic impacts, ranging from economic and media, through to social and environmental, which can provide significant benefits for host cities and nations beyond purely economic."

Sportcal, the world's leading provider of sports market intelligence, will conduct the study as part of the GSI Event Studies Programme which runs from 2017 through to 2020.

GSI Event Studies Programme 2017-2020:

Sportcal is embarking upon a four-year programme during the 2017-2020 Olympic cycle, which will bring federations, rights owners, host cities, governments and key stakeholders together to work with Sportcal and engage in the GSI Project.

The programme will involve the development of annual studies from a diverse range of sports and events, to help event owners and hosts understand the true impact of their events across a wide range of sectors, and to support them in the further development of their event strategies.
