Denmark to host 2021 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships

Canoeing - 27 Mar 2017

This weekend the ICF Board met in Manchester to award their major events. Denmark was awarded the 2021 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships after a bid-sprint out of the extraordinary where the strong competitor Canada seemed to be the favorite.

"We won a mad sprint and are very happy and proud to call ourselves world championships hosts in 2021. Along with Sport Event Denmark, Wonderful Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Gladsaxe and Lyngby-Taarbæk we now look forward to preparing the event, "says Ole Tikjøb, president of the Danish Canoe Federation.

Ole Tikjøb was in Manchester and presented the Danish bid with representatives from Sport Event Denmark, Wonderful Copenhagen and the city of Copenhagen.

2021 marks the 100-year anniversary of the Danish Canoe Federation. While 100 years may seem like a lot, Danish canoeing feels 100 years young! Denmark wants to ensure that the 2021 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships  leave a lasting legacy – this is why the Danish also committed to ensure that the 100 nations outreach programme will have a similar success.  The “100 nations outreach programme” is a well thought out plan, one where the Danes pledge to engage with 100 nations to continue the development and expansion of our sport around the world.

"It's not a secret that specifically Canada was a strong favorite to win the hosting of the 2021 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships. But as in all sports, it is about both making good preparations and not least perform on the day. Denmark had a very convincing presentation that was based on the 100th anniversary and on our proposal for a 100 nations outreach programme," says Lars Lundov, CEO of Sport Event Denmark, which has been the driving force in shaping the Danish bid.

Copenhagen 2021 – A capital city ideal for hosting sports events

Copenhagen is ready! Following the success from events like the 2015 World Archery Championships, the 2014 World Badminton Championships and the 2014 World Half Marathon Championships, Denmark’s capital – Copenhagen – guarantees that the 2021 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships will be even more successful.  Furthermore, participants and fans will find themselves embraced by the live metropolis of this capital city!

Visitors of the 2021 World Championship can rest easy during their stay as Copenhagen is safe, modern, green and well organised. It is an efficient city, easy to get around by foot, bicycle, bus, water-bus and environmentally friendly metro.
