EURO SWIM 2017 named the Best Sporting Event of the Year

Swimming - 26 Apr 2018

LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships 2017 is a winner! At the Copenhagen Congress & Event Award Show last night the event was awarded the prize as ‘The Best Sporting Event of the Year’ in Copenhagen by Wonderful Copenhagen and the City of Copenhagen.

Copenhagen hosts to numerous congresses and sporting events every year. EURO SWIM 2017 was the first sporting event to be hosted in the brand new, state-of-the-art multipurpose arena, Royal Arena. The event was nominated with two other nominees in the category "Best Sporting Event of the Year.

The jury's reasoning was: ‘The Royal Arena formed setting for an international championship that attracted more than 35,000 people over five days. Not only were there 10,000 more people than expected, also 16 percent of the audience came from abroad. It was an extraordinary event production that will serve as best case for many future major, international sporting events in Copenhagen.’

The Danish Swimming Federation receives the prize with great joy and pride:

"It has been a great pleasure for us to give our swimmers and the entire Swimming Denmark home ground at EURO SWIM 2017 in the stunningly beautiful Royal Arena. Five days of the celebration of swimming and huge support for all over Denmark. The fact that our achievements result in the distinguished honor "Best Sporting Event of the Year" is a wonderful surprise, as the Danish Swimming Federation and I are very proud to receive. In this regard, I would like to thank our partners for the event, Sport Event Denmark, Wonderful Copenhagen, the City of Copenhagen, Capital Region and the local Swim Club, Hovedstaden. In addition, a big thank you to the many volunteers who made sure that all the details were looked after. The importance of our volunteers is invaluable in this context. Finally, also thank you to the jury that awarded us the prize ‘Best Sporting Event of the Year’ in Copenhagen, says CEO of the Danish Swimming Federation, Pia Holmen.

Another of the event partners, Sport Event Denmark, also expresses both joy and satisfaction with the award:

"With LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships, we took the leap into the Royal Arena with major international sporting events. EURO SWIM 2017 was the very first sporting event that was staged in the arena by The Danish Swimming Federation, Copenhagen and Sport Event Denmark. As the jury also noted when they awarded the prize to the event; it was an event, that serves as best case in all aspects. Right now, the water is freezing to ice, as Denmark will host the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships next week in Royal Arena. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish the other two candidates in the category congratulations on the nomination. There were also two fantastic events that Sport Event Denmark has supported, says Lars Lundov, director of Sport Event Denmark.
