Brazil to Host Volleyball's 2002 World League Finals
Recife and Belo Horizonte, Brazil have been chosen to host the US$15 million 2002 World League Finals from 13-18 August 2002, the International Volleyball Federation and the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation announced Wednesday.
'It is very important for us,' said Brazilian Volleyball Federation President, Dr. Ary DA SILVA GRAÇA FILHO after the announcement that Brazil would host the finals.
'Last year we increased three per cent against football in Brazil - and as we won last year [the World League], I felt it was a very good opportunity to show to the Brazilian public our winning team, and gain a few more percentage points against football,' he said.
The sixteen teams that will compete for the US$15 million in prize money are Pool A - Brazil, Poland, Argentina, Portugal, Pool B - Italy, Spain, China, Venezuela, Pool C - Russia, Cuba, Netherlands, Germany, Pool D - Yugoslavia, France, Greece, Japan.
The 2002 World League will consist of a six-weekend Intercontinental Round played in sixteen countries, starting 28-30 June, 2002, (then 5-7 July, 12-14 July, 19-21 July, 26-28 July and 2-4 August), with the World League Finals from 13-18 August 2002.
The Intercontinental Round will consist of four pools of four teams (sixteen teams), with twelve matches for each team; two matches each weekend for six weekends. There will be three home matches and three away matches for each team.
Brasília, Goiânia and João Pessoa will host the three Brazilian legs of the World League Intercontinental Round, with Recife and Belo Horizonte hosting the finals. Belo Horizonte will host the final 1-2 and 3-4 matches.
The World League Finals will consist of two pools of four teams (eight teams), playing a total of sixteen matches, including semi-finals and finals.
All the matches will be broadcasted live by Globo and Sportv within Brazil, with international distribution already confirmed to over 16 countries.
Belo Horizonte, capital of the state of Minas Gerais, is Brazil's third largest city and an important industrial centre. It has a population of 2.5 million and is situated inland between Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia.
Recife, the capital of the state of Pernambuco, is known as the 'Venice of Brazil' because it is dissected by numerous waterways. It is situated on the northeastern tip of the Brazilian coast and has a population of approximately 1.5 million.
