Surf Life Saving Australia has appointed Active Television as Host Broadcaster to Rescue 2000 World Lifesaving Championships in Sydney, (March 23 - April 2, 2000).
Active will also produce a 90-minute highlights program for telecast on Network Ten.
The Championships will include contests for national teams, club teams, masters, surfboats, IRB's and open still water boats. The event is shaping up to be the largest gathering of international lifesavers ever held with 25 countries and approximately 3000 athletes competing.
Countries attending include Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA, South Africa, Great Britain, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan.
With events split between Manly Beach for the surf competition and the Sydney International Aquatic Centre for the still water competition, the World Championships promise to be a spectacular event.
Paul Smith CEO Surf Life Saving NSW and Head of the Organising Committee said 'This an exciting and most important event for Life Saving worldwide but particularly here in Australia. We are aiming for a lift in profile, membership and sponsorship. We are very pleased Active is on board to provide the television coverage, contributing to the event's success and to our objectives'
Active's General Manager Richard McLelland was equally enthusiastic about the Championships, and said, 'In the Olympic Year, this is going to be a fantastic carnival of international competition to be held in two most outstanding locations. The coverage will provide the viewing public the opportunity to see some of the world's best lifesavers in some very exciting action'.
