Canadian Makuks Walser Appointed to Key Position Within IPC Alpine Skiing Technical Committee

Skiing - Alpine - 05 Jul 2007
CALGARY, AB (July 4th, 2007) – Canadian alpine ski racing official Markus Walser has been appointed Head of Technical Control and Officiating, a new position within the International Paralympic Committee and a significant appointment as Canada prepares to host the 2010 Paralympic Games in Vancouver / Whistler.

The term of the position within the IPC’s new Alpine Skiing Technical Committee is from 2007 through 2010.

Walser, an experienced technical delegate in both able-bodied and para-alpine ski racing, will be responsible for overseeing many officiating issues at all levels of para-alpine ski racing as well as technical issues related to equipment.

“Over the last several years I have become more involved internationally and nationally in the sport of para-alpine skiing. This new position will allow me to have a role in further developing the sport in Canada and provides Canada with a place at the table at the international level,” said Walser.

A ski instructor and coach, Walser has been a certified alpine skiing official since 1989. He has been a FIS Technical Delegate at two able-bodied World Cup races and the Chief of Race at Para-Alpine World Cup races in Kimberley, BC in 2005 and 2007.

“IPC Alpine Skiing is at an exciting stage of development for which (Walser’s) technical expertise and knowledge will undoubtedly contribute greatly to further establishing a strong foundation for sport and support its evolution,“ said IPC Chief Executive Officer Xavier Gonzalez in a press release.

“Hosting the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games provides Canada with a tremendous opportunity with respect to growing our technical expertise and contributing to the sport of alpine skiing. The appointment of Markus Walser represents a great opportunity to advance Canada as a key player on the world stage in para-alpine ski racing,” said ACA Chief Executive Officer Ken Read.

“The appointment of Markus Walser will be tremendously beneficial to everyone in the Canadian para-alpine ski racing community as we pursue the goal of being the world’s best ski racing nation. He has shown a tremendous commitment to para-alpine ski racing over the years and he is very deserving of this appointment,” said CPAST High Performance Director Jean-François Rapatel.
