Cathy Freeman Tops Fan Mail Chart
If Australian athletics star Cathy Freeman answered all her mail, she would never make it to the track in time. The Aboriginal runner, who lit the Olympic cauldron at the spectacular opening ceremony, tops the list as the most popular athlete in the Olympic village.
Fans have sent around 200,000 letters to the village, postal officials say. Ninety percent were for Australian athletes and Freeman topped the chart with 25,000.
Freeman is hot favourite to win the 400 metres gold medal after her arch rival, French sprint queen Marie-Jose Perec, fled Australia in tears on Thursday. Freeman is also running the 200 metres.
