Channel 4 to Extend Skiing Coverage

Skiing - 29 Jan 2004

Channel 4 today announced that they are to extend the Sunday morning edition of Skiing on 4. The show will double in length from 30 minutes to one hour and run from 08:00 – 09:00 each Sunday morning until the end of the season.

The move comes on the back of what looks likely to be Britain’s most successful Winter Sports season ever, and also takes into account the positive reception to the programming.

Britain’s skiers and snowboarders are having their best season ever. Chemmy Alcott recently had the first top 10 finish by a British woman in a World Cup Downhill since Davina Galicia in 1970, while snowboarder Lesley McKenna is leading the Snowboard Half-Pipe World Cup rankings and 18 year old Zoe Gillings has been placed as high as second in the World Cup Boarder Cross standings.

David Kerr, Head of Sport at C4 says;

'British skiers are having a terrific season and with great stories like the resurgence of Herman Meier also fighting for space, we have decided to extend the Sunday programme. With 7 hours of Winter Sports a week, Channel 4 viewers now have more comprehensive coverage of the Skiing World Cup than we’ve ever had on British TV.'

Other notable British successes include slalom specialist Alain Baxter, who has returned to the top 20 in the world, while his younger brother Noel has also claimed his first ever World Cup points this season.

C4 has become the new home of winter sports, providing more terrestrial coverage than ever before, and has secured exclusive rights to the vast majority of the World Cup races throughout the season.
