Couchman Harrington Acts in Football Transfer Deals

Soccer - 10 Feb 2006

Leading niche sports business law firm, Couchman Harrington Associates, had a busy start to the year acting for players and advising agents in the recent January transfer window. The firm was involved in two of the largest transfers between English clubs, when it acted for SFX clients, Danny Murphy, in his transfer from Charlton to Spurs and Marcus Bent, in his transfer from Everton to Charlton, with a combined value of over 3 million pounds.

CHA partner, Fraser Reid who acted for both players said;

“These are significant deals and add to the growing portfolio of high profile footballers we have acted for. The introduction of the F.A’s new Football Agent’s Regulations has resulted in a raft of new regulatory requirements which both players and licensed agents require advice upon. We were able to fill this role and envisage more work in future player transfers as a result.”

The firm also advised on three other transactions involving SFX clients who were transferred to Liverpool, Celtic and Cardiff City respectively. These transfers come on the back of CHA advising a number of other leading footballers on their endorsement deals and/or image rights structures including Michael Owen, Damien Duff, Dwight Yorke and Steven Gerrard.

Couchman Harrington Associates is a commercial law firm offering specialist legal advice to the sports industry.  The leading independent legal directories say the following about the firm:

“Remarkably successful at a time when other firms have been looking to exit the sports market…winning business model” (Legal 500)

“Rising star of the sports world – has cemented its position in the market place…great base of knowledgeable and industry wise people” (Chambers Directory)
