Cuba Assures Olympic Participation
HAVANA, February 10 --- Cuban NOC President Jose Ramon Fernandez has blatantly denied rumors circulating in the European Press that they will boycott the Sydney Games if the doping case against world record high-jumper Javier Sottomayer isn't dismissed. Cuba is gearing up to take over 250 athletes to the - 150 more than the last Olympiad in Atlanta.
Traces of cocaine were detected in Sottomayer's urine sample at the Pan American Games and the jumper was forced to relinquish his gold medal.
Cuban authorities have questioned the testing methods and have appealed that the athlete not be sanctioned until the matter is clarified.
