Cycling's Pro Tour: the Reform Is not Clear for the Public
Last month, Sports Marketing Surveys’ Eurosport Poll* asked sports fans about the Pro Tour - the reform of professional cycling competitions initiated by the UCI, and which is planned to be launched in 2005.
The key finding is that there is a general lack of awareness about the Pro Tour at this stage. In France and Germany, only a third of sports fans have heard of it, whilst in Great Britain, not a big cycling country, this proportion falls to 14%.
Among those respondents aware of the Pro Tour, two thirds say this reform is, or could be, a positive thing, but they are reserving judgement until they know more about it.
Indeed, 73% of sports fans think that this reform has not been well explained. Furthermore, half of the fans think this reform doesn't tackle the most urgent problem in cycling: doping.
Once the parameters of the Pro Tour are more clearly defined, the UCI will need to implement a regime of communication and explanation in order to increase support from the public.
* Eurosport Poll is an Internet tracking study created in a joint venture between Sports Marketing Surveys Ltd and the sports channel Eurosport. Every month, a panel of French, German and English people are asked about sporting issues.
