Davis Cup by BNP Paribas - Impressive TV Coverage For First Round Ties
The World Group feature tie, France versus Sweden, was broadcast live in 28 countries, including Australia, China, Singapore, Spain, UK, USA and the Middle East.
France Televisions, the host broadcaster, attracted more than 13.5 million viewers over the weekend with an impressive 4.7 million following the decisive last rubber between Paul-Henri Mathieu and Thomas Johansson. Sweden's SVT registered regular market shares of 30% throughout the weekend, while Sport+ France, USA's Tennis Channel and Spain's TVE, all dedicated considerable live and delayed coverage. TVE combined its coverage with that of the Slovak Republic v Spain tie.
In other World Group ties, Russia's NTV Plus and RTR started the Davis Cup season in style with extensive coverage of Russia v Chile; while audience figures in Chile, back in the World Group after 20 years, were around 50% of market share.
TV Romania's audience increased throughout the weekend as the home team made a great comeback against Belarus. Over 2 million viewers - a remarkable 28% market share - watched the two reverse singles rubbers during more than six hours of play of Sunday. There were equally dramatic matches between Switzerland and Netherlands, with the host broadcaster SRG registering market shares of 26.9%. STV in the Slovak Republic registered a consistent 22.8% market share during Saturday's doubles rubber that gave the Slovaks the winning point against 2004 champion Spain.
