Delhi Welcomes Commonwealth Games Bid Evaluation Report
The offices of the Indian Olympic Association and the Delhi bid team for the 2010 Commonwealth Games were celebrating and exuding optimism today after receiving the Report of the Games Evaluation Commission for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
The report states that both Delhi and Hamilton (in Canada) 'are both capable of staging a successful Commonwealth Games in 2010'
The evaluation committee report gives particularly high marks for Delhi’s initiatives in providing travel grants and accommodation well beyond CGF requirements; using the Games to implement a legacy programme of further developing the city’s infrastructure; government agreement to underwrite the cost of the Games removing financial uncertainty; its competition friendly weather and the use of the Games to promote sport amongst India’s youth which comprises one-quarter of the total population of the Commonwealth.
President of the Indian Olympic Association and the head of the 2010 bidding team Mr. Shri Suresh Kalmadi was delighted by the report:
'The report couldn’t be better. The serious and very professional work done by Evaluation Committee has documented that Delhi can stage a superb Games in 2010, the first time that the Commonwealth Games would be held in India, and I am very proud of the work done by our team of technical experts who have worked very hard on the bid for an extended period.
Now it is up to us to ensure that all the Commonwealth members understand how important these Games are to India, to the entire region and ultimately to the on-going development of the Commonwealth Games movement. Not only India, but the entire region is 100% behind Delhi hosting the Games. If we are successful the Games will be our nation’s sole focus, no other major sporting event will detract from the attention it receives and deserves.'
The decision will be made when the 72 Commonwealth nations meet in Jamaica for their General Assembly on November 13.
