Denmark and Latvia Have Submitted a Joint Bid for the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship
The Danish Ice Hockey Association (DIU) and the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation (LHF) have today officially handed in a joint bid for the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. IIHF now has about five months to examine the bids before awarding the championship in May 2013 during the World Congress in Stockholm.
Denmark will be main host and Latvia co-host of the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. Denmark ranks #12 in the current IIHF World Ranking and Latvia #11. Both countries have participated in the World Championship continuously for many years.
A state of the art multi arena, Copenhagen Arena, will host the finals and semifinals as well as 30 preliminary matches. The new and modern Copenhagen Arena is currently under construction and will be finalized in 2015. Denmark will also play host to the World Congress that will be staged during the days of the finals in May 2017. Latvia will host the rest of the matches in Riga.
“I’m proud of this very strong joint bid for the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship from Denmark and Latvia. The event is one of the world’s biggest sports events and thus a great and exciting challenge for any host. In Denmark the set-up for the finals has been sketched together with our partners Sport Event Denmark and Wonderful Copenhagen. The concept is based on outstanding facilities, a strong event organization and an activation plan that involves the Danish population and further develops Danish hockey,” says Henrik Bach Nielsen, DIU President.
“With this World Championship, Denmark will add another great event to the Danish sports event calendar that in 2013 contains among other events the LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships, the CEV European Volleyball Championship, the FEI 2013 European Dressage and Jumping Championships and in 2014 the EHF Men’s European Handball Championships, the BWF World Badminton Championships and the IAAF World Half Marathon Championship,” says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark.
"What we did in 2006, we will do again in 2017: Creating an unforgettable event for the global hockey fans in a passionate hockey nation!," says Kirovs Lipmans, LHF President.
