Denmark host of the 2018 World Masters Orienteering Championships

Orienteering - 06 Aug 2015

Denmark will host the 2018 World Masters Orienteering Championships. The event was awarded to Denmark today by the International Orienteering Federation, IOF. In the final race for the championships Denmark was up against Slovakia.

“Denmark has made an excellent presentation on site of the proposed courses and set-up for the 2018 World Masters Orienteering Championships. I must admit that everything has been thought of and the settings are perfect for a championship like ours with the sprint finals staged in the very heart of Copenhagen,” says Michael Sørensen, CEO, Danish Orienteering Federation.

“We wanted the International Orienteering Federation to benefit from our event experience and therefore we were pleased to present Denmark and the actual sites and proposed courses together with Sport Event Denmark, Wonderful Copenhagen and Royal North Sealand. We know how important it is for the athletes to have everything at close range. Therefore, we have chosen Copenhagen and North Zealand as our event destination. Close to beach and all kinds of entertainment - you can really say we offer: “All in one Place!” says Sørensen.

“In Denmark, we have a long-standing and strong tradition for international sporting events and also for events within the orienteering sport. During the last decades we have built up experience as hosts of also many prestigious international orienteering championships and the staging of the sprint finals at Christiansborg Palace will be epic,” says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark.

The forests of North Zealand have belonged to the King and were used for hunting. The forests have been nominated to become a World Inheritance because of the remains of the Parforce Hunting system, developed in France, which gives some of the forests a special and unique form.

Copenhagen Airport is located only 8 km from Copenhagen Centre and Copenhagen is also well connected to the rest of Europe, making domestic and international travel by car or train easy.

The 2018 World Masters Orienteering Championships will be staged through tripartition of the tasks. Danish Orienteering Federation and the clubs plan and execute on the orienteering competitions while Sport Event Denmark, Wonderful Copenhagen and Royal North Sealand partner the event and will help with the national and international marketing of the championships.
