Denmark Sets Sails for ISAF Worlds 2014
Denmark/the City of Aarhus have just handed in their bid for the ISAF Sailing World Championships 2014 to the International Sailing Association, ISAF; a huge event with the World Championships for all the Olympic sailing classes embedded in one and the same event.
ISAF Worlds is a very wanted event. A cursory glance at the short list of potential host cities, recently released by ISAF, reveals that the competition, which Denmark is up against, is extremely fierce. International sailing cities stand in line to host the event, which attracts more than 1,000 boats, 1,500 yachtsmen, 600 international media representatives and more than 6,000 accredited sailors and officials.
Chief Executive Lars Lundov of Sport Event Denmark says: “Indeed, we are up against 7 strong competitors, but with the right preliminary work we can succeed, just as we did in 2009 when Copenhagen won the right to host the IOC Session & Olympic Congress ahead of other strong competitors.”
No less than four of the bidding countries have staged part of the Olympic Games in recent time, among others Qingdao in China, which hosted the sailing competitions at the Olympic Games 2008. The other bidding cities are: Buenos Aires (Argentina) , Kingston (Canada), Busan (Korea), Pomerania (Poland), Santander (Spain), The Hague (Holland) and Denmark.
General Secretary of the Danish Sailing Association, Dan Ibsen, says: “We acknowledge the strong competition we are facing, but at the same time we believe that we stand a very good chance of winning.
Generally seen, ISAF can place the ISAF Worlds 2014 in America, Europe or Asia. We cannot change Denmark’s location on the world map, but having said that we are convinced that the Danish bid is the strongest European bid.
Deadline for preliminary bids was 15 October. On 1 December, the short listed cities are to hand in their final bid and in January the cities are in for a presentation of their bids to an evaluation committee. Eventually, at the end of February 2011 ISAF’s executive committee is appointing the host city of the event.
