Denmark to Host the World Archery Championships 2015

Archery - 15 Nov 2010

Copenhagen has won the right to host the World Archery Championships 2015. The decision was made by FITA, the International Archery Federation, at their meeting in Istanbul today. Beyond Denmark, Poland had handed in a bid.

4,000 spectators in Copenhagen get the opportunity to watch the world’s best archers fight for medals at the World Archery Championships in 2015, when the finals are staged at the Kvæsthusbroen (Kvæsthus Bridge) with the Opera House in the background. And it is not the first time that archery at top level is exposed in Copenhagen.

Rolf Lind, President of the Danish Archery Federation, says: “Thanks to our World Cup final 2009 we have great experience in staging a major international archery event. We do realize, however, that the World Archery Championships exceed the World Cup final, both as far as participants and spectators are concerned. Therefore, it is time for action now. We are teaming up with Sport Event Denmark and Wonderful Copenhagen to ensure that the World Archery Championships 2015 will be a memorable event with long-term legacies”.

For the first time ever, the World Cup final 2009 was hosted in Northern Europe. The event was staged in one of the coziest and most crowded areas of Copenhagen called Nyhavn, Thus, the event was embedded in an unprecendented way by the local population, tourists and the city space itself. The archers were lined up at the gangway in the canal, aiming at targets at a temporary bridge across the canal

Lars Lundov, Chief Executive of Sport Event Denmark, says: ”We are pleased to learn that one more top event in an Olympic sport has been secured. Our bid was extremely strong and unique thanks to among other things our suggestion to stage the event outside in spectacular surroundings, and it proves that Denmark stands for innovation in terms of staging major international sports events”.

Lars Vallentin, Business Development Manager of Wonderful Copenhagen, adds: “Copenhagen is the perfect setting of the World Archery Championships 2015. We have already proven that we are able to stage top-class archery events, beyond all the other major international sports events and congresses we have hosted lately. In 2011, Copenhagen is hosting two very prestigious World Championships: The World BMX Championships and the UCI Road World Championships. Adding the World Archery Championships 2015 to our portfolio, Copenhagen further strengthens its position on the world map.”
