Denmark's Aalborg to Host Archery's World Indoor Championships
The council of the International Archery Federation (FITA) Saturday voted in favor of the town of Aalborg in Denmark to host the World Indoor Championships in 2005. The vote took place during the FITA Council meeting in Madrid which will end Sunday.
The challenger to the Danish bid was Acapulco in Mexico. Both countries had sent representatives to promote their bids to the 12 council members.
'We are very excited about winning the bid. Up until now, everything has just been schemes on paper. Now reality sets in, and I’m sure the mayor of Aalborg as well as the whole Danish archery community will be thrilled about the good news,' said the chairman of Aalborg Archery Club, Henrik Toft.
The World Championships will be held at the end of March of 2005 and will be the first world event for archery in Denmark.
Said FITA Director Tom Dielen: 'The World Championships in 2005 will be the last one under the presidency of James Easton. FITA together with the organizers will turn this into an exciting event.'
The club, assisted by the Danish National Archery Federation and the city of Aalborg, started preparing the bid in February. Aalborg is situated in the north of the peninsula Jutland and has 161.000 inhabitants. The organizers expect quite a few spectators coming over from Norway and Sweden, the latter being a very strong archery nation.
The FITA council found that the bid from Acapulco was not quite ready.
'For the promotion of archery in South America, we realize that hosting a World Championship is vital for that continent. Therefore we encourage the Mexicans to complete their bid and re-enter it for 2007,' said Giuseppe Cinnirella (ITA), Secretary General of FITA.
The Danish bid was more solid, but concern was raised by the council members that the venue Aalborg Hallen was too small. The organizers, however, intend to solve that problem by an effective programming of the competitions.
'The bidding is part of a development plan for Danish archery. We now have the incentive we need to promote the sport on the grass root level. Moreover, it will boost the preparation for our elite archers,' explained John Skou, board member of the Danish Archery Federation.
