Deutsche Bahn Named 2006 Fifa World Cup Supplier
Deutsche Bahn AG is the sixth and final Official Supplier of the 2006 FIFA World Cup™, Deutsche Bahn AG Chairman Hartmut Mehdorn and German Organising Committee (OC) President Franz Beckenbauer announced in Berlin on Tuesday. 'We are delighted and proud to welcome the German railways to our team. A global event such as this is hardly imaginable without the railway network as a provider of mobility and logistic services,' Beckenbauer declared (OC Photo: Hartmut Mehdorn and Franz Beckenbauer at Berlin´s East station).
The OC President and the railways chief arrived at the capital's Ostbahnhof (East station) on board the original 1954 world champions' train. Fifty years ago, the train carried the players responsible for the 'Miracle of Bern' on a triumphant tour of Germany. 'The 2006 FIFA World Cup is a chance for Deutsche Bahn AG to showcase its wide-ranging areas of expertise,' commented Mehdorn. 'Our role as official mobility and logistic service provider to the 2006 FIFA World Cup allows us to draw on the full and extensive resources of all Deutsche Bahn AG's operating units. A huge number of officials and football fans from around the world will be relying on the local and long-distance railway network, both before and during the World Cup. Our stations will be meeting points for the fans.'
Continued Hartmut Mehdorn: 'The world's biggest and most significant sports event makes exceptionally heavy demands on any logistic system. Our subsidiary Schenker Stinnes has a huge reservoir of experience from a number of Olympic games, and recently handled the entire logistics operation for the German Football Association (DFB) at the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan. Deutsche Bahn AG group intends to enhance its reputation as reliable, mobile, flexible and client focused on the road to 2006 and then at the tournament itself.'
As an Official Supplier, Deutsche Bahn AG will support the media with a service never seen before at a major international sports event. Along with their World Cup accreditation, some 6,000 media representatives will receive six weeks' free individual travel on the entire local and long-distance railway network.
The jewels in the railway network's crown are the high-speed ICE connections between the twelve arenas. 'The venues will not be reachable more cheaply or more comfortably. This model also supports our Green Goal environment program,' OC vice-president in charge of marketing and media Wolfgang Niersbach commented. 'It's not just the trains, the stations will be decked out in World Cup regalia. We will lay on a fantastic reception for all our visitors, both local and from overseas.'
Deutsche Bahn AG has taken up the sixth and final Official Supplier slot. The Organising Committee has previously signed Official Supplier deals with Energiebetriebe Baden-Württemberg (EnBW) and its Yello-Strom brand, Hamburg-Mannheimer Versicherungs AG, Postbank, DIY chain OBI and sports betting firm ODDSET. Event promoter FIFA finalised the list of 15 Official Partners some time ago. Only the Official Partners and the six Official Suppliers are permitted to advertise using the Official Trademarks (logo, mascot, poster, music). The 21 companies, each representing a strictly defined product category, have exclusive rights to a presence at the stadiums, especially as regards perimeter advertising, and also at all official FIFA and OC events.
'I'm delighted we have been able to conclude contracts with our partners and suppliers at such an early stage. This provides yet more evidence of the appeal of the FIFA World Cup and the exceptionally high expectations relating to Germany 2006,' observed FIFA General Secretary Dr. Urs Linsi.
