Disease Forces Cancellation of Gatcombe Horse Trials
The Doubleprint British Horse Trials Championships due to be held at Gatcombe Park, Gloucestershire, the home of HRH The Princess Royal, from August 3 - 5 has become the latest victim of the nationwide foot and mouth outbreak and will not run in 2001.
Captain Mark Phillips said, 'This has been a very difficult decision with many issues to consider including our responsibilities to the local agricultural community in the light of the latest flair up of foot and mouth. With this in mind we have had to come to this sad decision as a delay would have incurred large financial penalties with our contractors. In the current climate we believe it would be wrong to put further pressure and risk on the countryside by running an event of the size of the British Open'.
George Ward, Chairman of Doubleprint, endorsed the decision of Captain Phillips and his team at Gatcombe Park. 'We wholeheartedly support, what has been a very difficult decision and we look forward to planning for the year 2002 when Mark Phillips has some exciting ideas for a new look to the Championships.'
The Doubleprint British Horse Trials Championships - the largest one-day event in the world - has joined a host of other world class events that have been cancelled in Britain this year, including Badminton and Bramham three-day events and numerous county shows.
