Dutch Olympic Committee Signs Deal with Coca-Cola
Coca-Cola Nederland and NOC*NSF [The Dutch Olympic Committee*Dutch Sports Federation] signed a two-year contract today to promote youth participation in sports.
The Olympic ideals, such as fair play, will be an important aspect of the project. Through their collaboration, both parties emphasise the social role played by organised sports and the importance of sports as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Both partners will therefore be seeking to acquaint more young people with different types of sports and to encourage young people to become and stay physically active. Coca-Cola Nederland will invest EUR 1.2 million in the project.
The project, which will target young people between the ages of 12 and 19, will concentrate on three elements:
- a national school competition;
- a running event for youth;
- the possibility for young people to become involved in an organised sport at a reduced rate.
To support these and other sports activities, the partners will make sports equipment and facilities available. The various sports activities will take place in many local communities throughout the Netherlands.
According to Hans Blankert, president of NOC*NSF, the collaboration with Coca-Cola Nederland will provide a major boost in promoting sports for all in the Netherlands: 'Our goal is have everyone living in the Netherlands become active in sports. We hope that our project with Coca-Cola will motivate even more young people to find their way to the many sports clubs so abundant in our country and to spend their leisure time there in a social and active way. Of course, national sports associations will be important in this regard.'
Pier Baarsma, General Manager of Coca-Cola Nederland, views the project as a logical step for Coca-Cola: 'Coca-Cola has long been involved in youth sports. Since 1928, we have supported the Olympic movement throughout the world, also focusing on young people and their commitment to the Olympic ideals and participation in sports.
'In the Netherlands too, we sponsor local initiatives in which we encourage young people to combine sports and pleasure and to make exercise part of their daily routine. That's why we're very enthusiastic about our project with NOC*NSF and hope to make a contribution to an athletic and active lifestyle for more and more young people.'
The details of the collaboration between Coca-Cola Nederland and NOC*NSF will be further specified in the coming months. The project will start in 2003.
