EBU Takes Permanent Lease of PanAmSat Transponder
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has reached an
agreement with PanAmSat for a permanent lease of one of the fleet's transponders affording it enhanced coverage and feeding capacity from and over the Americas.
Speaking about the new lease, Mr Henri Pérez, Director of the EBU Operations Department, said that 'this arrangement further underpins the continued geographical broadening of the Eurovision services and is to be instrumental in providing feeds of two major sporting events in the course of the next 12 months, namely the World Athletics Championship in Edmonton, Canada, and the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, the USA'.
Mr. Pérez added that the agreement is also to boost the EBU's capability to export feeds of a substantial number of major European events to the Americas, as well as backhauling coverage of events taking place in the Americas.
PanAmSat's Managing Director, Europe, Ken Scott, also commented on the conclusion of the agreement saying it represented 'a significant extension of our long-standing ad hoc service relationship... We are gratified by the
EBU's faith in the reliability and performance of the PanAmSat fleet and look forward to a long and successful relationship'.
The agreement gives the EBU a permanent lease of 18 MHz on transponder 19 of PanAmSat's PAS-9 satellite at the 302* East (58* West) position. The transponder offers global beam coverage and can be operated both to and from Europe and the Americas. The announcement comes only a day after the EBU unveiled it had acquired additional transponder capacity on the Eutelsat W1 satellite affording it expanded coverage of Europe and the Middle East.
Eurovision, a service of the EBU, provides ad-hoc transmission capabilities used primarily to distribute sport, cultural and news programme material to its members and customers.
In 2000 alone, Eurovision transmitted more than 100 000 news reports and 8500 hours of sporting and cultural events. Fully digital with a total capacity over Europe of up to 38 channels on five wide-band transponders on the new Eutelsat W3 and W1 satellites, the Eurovision Network is the number one provider of international television transmission services in the world, covering Europe, North Africa, the Persian Gulf and Asia, with a permanent transponder lease on Asiasat 2, and now the Americas with a permanent lease on PanAmSat PAS-9.
The EBU groups 69 national broadcasters from 50 countries in the European area and its activities include operating the Eurovision and Euroradio networks, the co-ordination of news and sports programming, promotion of technical
standardisation, stimulation of co-productions, and the defence and promotion of public service broadcasting.
