ESPN Classic Secures Premiership Football

Soccer - 06 Oct 2006

ESPN Classic is delighted to announce they have reached an agreement with the Premier League which gives them access to a library of 200 fantastic games, from which they will initially select 50 of the most exhilarating Premiership matches since the formation of the elite league. The Premiership has excited football fans for over fourteen seasons, during which time they’ve experienced the highs and lows, the thrills and spills, the cheers and tears.  Fans will now be able to relive some truly memorable encounters by tuning into ESPN Classic, Sky Channel 442.

Remember Blackburn Rovers pipping Manchester United to be crowned champions on the last day of the 1994/95 season despite losing 2-1 at Anfield?  The following season, Liverpool’s outrageous comeback against Newcastle to win 4-3 had pundits and fans alike gushing at the beautiful game. The 1997/98 season heralded the beginning of the Wenger v Ferguson era and saw the Gunners win their first-ever Premiership title having begun their winning streak against Manchester United in a 5 goal thriller at Highbury. When Manchester United went 3-0 down at White Hart Lane in 2001, no-one could possibly imagine they’d score five in the second half to demolish Spurs and secure the three points.

All these games and many more will be shown on ESPN Classic every weekday at 7pm, commencing on 9th October.  ESPN Classic will be the first broadcaster outside Sky, The BBC and ITV to gain rights to show this unrivalled Premiership content in the UK.

Phil Lines, Head of Media Operations at the F.A Premier League said – “ESPN Classic is a great way for the Premier League to showcase some of our most memorable moments since the start of the competition in 1992.  This deal gives our fans a chance to relive and enjoy classic Premiership matches from over the years and we are delighted to be working with ESPN Classic on this venture.”

Tony Stimpson, Director of Programming, Europe at ESPN Classic said - “We are delighted we have been able to secure this fantastic content for the channel.  The Premiership has given British football fans some wonderful moments through the years and fulfills ESPN Classic’s ambition to bring the best of British Sport to UK sports fans, we’re  thrilled these flagship matches will be a part of our exciting Autumn schedule.”
