ESPN Pool Coverage Tops July Ratings Chart
The World Professional Pool Championship 2001 (WPPC) – broadcast on ESPN – was the most-watched sports programme on all cable networks across Chinese Taipei in July and has proven to be the Taiwanese viewers’ choice for quality, professional pool programming.
Over the course of the tournament a cumulative reach of more than 3.6 million viewers was achieved. This represents an increase of 38% from viewership figures from previous years.
During matches featuring Taiwanese players such a Zhang Haoping, Yang Qingshun and Lai Jiaxiong, viewers spent at least 40% more time watching ESPN than any other cable channel.
Audience profiling was skewed towards upmarket professionals and those with tertiary education. Upscale male viewing peaked at 6.8 rating points. Female viewers tuned in, too, with almost half of their cable viewing time (across all genres) dedicated to ESPN.
ESPN STAR Sports’ Managing Director, Rik Dovey attributes the ratings success to a combination of market-specific programming, quality presentation and comprehensive marketing and PR support.
'The World Professional Pool Championships is a good example of our approach,' he said. 'We strive to give viewers in all our markets more of the sport they want to see – in a format and language that appeals to them. Programming and presentation are tailored to local tastes, while at the same time, they retain the flavour and international quality that is synonymous with ESPN STAR Sports.'
For the WPPC, ESPN broadcast live from the UK. For the Mandarin-language service, popular Chinese Taipei presenter, Mats Hsu was part of all the excitement at Cardiff. He was there on site to interview the winners and to keep viewers up-to-date on the progress of the Taiwanese competitors. ESPN’s Francis Chang Fu Ning, Su Dong and Chinese Taipei national pool coach, Chang Wen Ping, provided commentary and analysis.
To support its coverage of the match, ESPN created an entire package of highlights, profiles of top competitors and interviews with local contestants. A comprehensive publicity campaign saw extensive media coverage both pre- and post-event.
