Euroleague Basketball Helps UNICEF to 'Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS'

Basketball - 20 Apr 2007
Barcelona, April 19th, 2007. Euroleague Basketball is proud to announce its support for "UNITE FOR CHILDREN, UNITE AGAINST AIDS", the global campaign of UNICEF that works to diminish the devastating impact of AIDS on young people.
Through a constant awareness of the fundamental importance for community well-being, Euroleague Basketball has always tried to promote social welfare through all of its support activities.

Now, Euroleague Basketball expands that commitment to UNICEF, which for more than 60 years has been the world's leading advocate for children, saving more young lives than any other humanitarian organization on the globe.
Working in over 150 countries and territories, UNICEF is the only organization that confronts the whole range of interrelated issues involved in childhood mortality. From nutrition to protection, healthcare to education, no other organization combines UNICEF's vast experience, extensive resources and global perspective in the effort to save children's lives.

Euroleague Basketball supports UNICEF

AIDS has been a focus of international concern for more than two decades, yet its impact on children has received too little attention. The numbers of children affected were not even counted until recently. Today, UNICEF is focused on how AIDS is changing the lives of children and young people all over the world. Urgent imperatives can make a real difference in the lives and life chances of children affected by HIV/AIDS, which has left virtually no country, rich or poor, untouched. In the 54 countries where adult HIV prevalence has reached more than 1 per cent in the general population, HIV/AIDS is directly affecting millions of children, adolescents and young people. In the hardest-hit countries, health systems are increasingly losing their capacity to treat and care for children and their families with simple and affordable interventions that can save millions of lives.

UNICEF knows how to make it happen. The global spread of HIV/AIDS to children is like a torrent, rushing fast and growing stronger, and it is a torrent that must be stemmed and stopped through prevention, treatment and care.

Euroleague Basketball has teamed up with the Hellenic National Committee for UNICEF to highlight the circumstances of children and young people living with and affected by HIV. The "Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS" campaign is a call to action in recognition of our collective responsibility to fight for these young people. This commitment, once made, must be translated into concrete action. The aim is to draw attention to the issues facing children and young people affected by HIV.

The partnership is part of the Euroleague Basketball commitment to proumoting the spirit of Final Four 2007 and its positive impact on society. Players and officials from each team will support the "Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS" campaign during their games and during the final.

Euroleague Basketball, in coordination with its teams and players, will produce advertising in support of the campaign, will visit the children's section of a hospital in Athens, will host a charity stand at OAKA arena and will work on brand exposure.
Euroleague Basketball believes that together, with all our hope and dedication, this project will become a reality to the benefit of young people around the world hurt by AIDS.
