European Television Rights for World Rowing Renewed

Rowing - 12 Jun 2009

FISA and EBU seal a new agreement

FISA, the International Rowing Federation has reached an agreement with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) for the acquisition of the European media rights from 2009 to 2012. The agreement includes the World Rowing Championships, the Rowing World Cup series and the European Rowing Championships.

An added value to the new agreement is a new European web-streaming platform co-branded to match the official World Rowing website. This site will be the European home for all televised World Rowing events, archives of World Rowing Championships dating back to 1991 and regular interviews with leading rowers and coaches. The new web service is due to be launched in time for the second stage of the Rowing World Cup in Munich on 21 June.

Commenting on the agreement, Denis Oswald, FISA President, says: "We are really pleased to have extended our partnership with the EBU, our long time television partner. Such an agreement is important to a sport like rowing as we need to offer our viewers a consistently high-quality standard of production and free-to-view, live access offered by the EBU channels such as BBC, ARD/ZDF, RAI, Eurosport and many others. We enjoy excellent relationships with these channels and benefit from their loyal and substantial audiences."

Mr Réveillon, EBU Director General, added : "We are glad to have reached this agreement as we consider rowing a great sport, of high athletic value, which deserves to be widely broadcast. Furthermore, notwithstanding the traditional distribution channels, we are going to contribute to the sport's popularity by launching a new web platform which will increase both its audience and better target its fans. This is a very interesting evolution of our services".

Note to Editors:

FISA, "Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d'Aviron" in French, or the English equivalent International Federation of Rowing Associations is the governing body of the sport of rowing. It is empowered by its 130 member National Rowing Federations, the National Olympic Committees and the International Olympic Committee to govern the sport of rowing. FISA sets the rules and regulations for the practice of the sport, in all its forms (elite, adaptive, and soon coastal and indoor), and organises sanctioned World Rowing events. It also provides advice and expertise for the organisation of rowing regattas, on coaching education and other matters relating to the sport and its development. More on: http://www.worldrowing.com/

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is the largest association of national broadcasters in the world (75 active Members, 43 associate Members). The EBU helps public service broadcasters to deliver unique high quality programming to their audiences. It offers Members technical, operational and legal services, and coordinates a growing supply of quality content for radio, television and new platforms. The Eurovision and Euroradio networks, operated by the EBU, carry daily exchanges of programmes, music, sports events and news between Members, and other media players.
