All TV Deals in Place for Copa del Sol

Soccer - 02 Feb 2010

It is the coldest winter in decades in Scandinavia. The new international football tournament Copa del Sol help the teams to keep up the pace in the sun in Marbella.

International broadcasters have taken notice and all participating countries will air live from the event.

Eight European top football clubs are featured in Copa del Sol. The reigning UEFA Cup champions Shakhtar Donetsk from Ukraine dominate their group in the UEFA Europa League. The Russian cup winners CSKA Moscow are qualified for the play offs in the UEFA Champions League. Sweden is represented by the winner and runner-up from the national league (Allsvenskan) 2008 – Kalmar FF and IF Elfsborg. Topsides FC Copenhagen and Odense BK represent Denmark. The field is completed by the winner and runner-up of the Norwegian league – Rosenborg BK and Molde FK.

The interest from the media community includes broadcasters in Sweden/TV4 Sport, Norway/TV2 Sport, Denmark/Canal9, Russia/NTV+ and Ukraine/TRK all with plans to broadcast all 16 matches from the tournament. Further interest and new distribution has recently been secured through live broadcasts in Asia and Africa including France, Middle East, India, Hong Kong, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

“We are very pleased with the television coverage we are gaining at the first edition of Copa del Sol”, says Jonas Persson CEO at IEC in Sports, who has contracted Swedish production company Mediatec for the broadcast work.
IEC is responsible for the entire organization of the tournament together with the Norwegian training camp specialist Phoenix and the local Spanish partner Football Impact.

The round robin matches begin on 3rd February and the Final will be played on 12th February, approximately one month before the premiere of the Scandinavian national leagues. With the ambition to become the most interesting pre season tournament for club teams from Sweden, Denmark and Norway, the intention is to provide a top level training environment and matches at a high international level.

Copa del Sol does not only provide an opportunity for sportive development during pre season, but it also guarantees additional revenues by offering a total of SEK 2.000.000 in tournament prize money.
