Action sports - 20 Jun 2002

The Extreme Sports Channel is pleased to announce continuing expansion across Europe, bringing the total number of countries receiving the channel up to fifty additionally the channel has announced the sponsorship of new athletes in the fields of wakeboarding and surfing.

Brothers Nick and Julz Heaney are the first wakeboarders to join the prestigious ESC team. Nick, who won gold at the first stop of the European Wakeboard Tour in Italy said, 'We watch the channel a lot when we're in Europe and hear so many people raving about it, so to be a part of that is great.'

Welcome additions to the surfing team are Robyn Sunshine Davies, 26, and Reuben Ash, 14. Robyn is the four times ladies English Surf Champion who also currently holds third position on the World Qualifying Series, the highest ever ranking achieved by a British female, while Reuben is a star of the junior surfing circuit and is widely tipped to be a future champion of the international scene.

The new sports sponsorship deals commemorate Extreme Sports Channel breaking the half century barrier with new deals struck with Telia Stofa A/S, one of Denmark's leading cable operators and in Finland, via Suomen 3KTV and Turun Kaapelitelevisio Oy.

Expanding the reach of Extreme Sports Channel eastwards, the channel is now featured on ZAO Kosmos TV and ZAO Comcor TV systems in Russia. In May, the channel also launched on cable systems SIA FAO in Latvia, ET Super Max in Bulgaria, UAB Trigeris, UAB Kabeliniai, Salmija Ltd. and Kelmes Kabeline Televizija in Lithuania, all in their respective basic tiers.

Al Gosling, CEO Extreme Group, says 'Breaking the 50 countries barrier is a serious mile stone for us: it is due to the hard work and dedication of everyone here and the massive popularity of action sports. It really shows the channel has massive potential world wide and crosses all cultural boundries. It is proof that this is what people want.'
