Field Hockey's Fairweather Is New IOC Sports Director
Top hockey administrator Kelly Fairweather has been appointed as the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) new Sports Director, the IOC announced last week.
Kelly, former Director of High Performance of the South African Hockey Association (SAHA), will be responsible for the IOC's relationships with the 35 International Olympic Sports Federations, the 28 IOC-recognised International Federations and all other major organisations in the world of sport. Whilst at SAHA Kelly was responsible for the management and coordination of all national teams of all age groups for both men and women.
His involvement in sport and hockey in particular has been strong throughout his career, which he started as a hockey player at provincial and junior national level before becoming head coach of the women's national team. He is now an FIH Grade 1 coach.
The IOC cites Kelly's 'strong background in sport', allied to four years of experience working at the IOC, as providing the springboard for his promotion to the new role.
Kelly stated, 'I am delighted and honoured to take up this new role. Sport, and the values it carries, has always played a key role in my life and professional career. I look forward to putting my sporting and management experiences at the services of the International Federations and Olympic Movement as a whole.'
FIH President, Mrs Els van Breda Vriesman, commented, 'All at FIH congratulate Kelly on his appointment and wish him success at the IOC.'
