FISU membership elects new board for 2015-19 at 34th General Assembly

University sports - 09 Nov 2015

LAUSANNE - On 8 November, during the second day of the 34th General Assembly in Lausanne, the FISU Membership elected a new Executive Board to lead FISU for the next four years, i.e. the period 2015-2019.

Former 1st Vice-President Oleg Matytsin was elected President for the period 2015-2019 with 102 votes vs. 23 for incumbent President Claude-Louis Gallien. In a first quote following his electoral victory, the new FISU President said the following: “I’m very proud to be elected as the new FISU President, I’m fully aware it is a great responsibility for me and my team. We need to establish first our tradition, but at the same time we have to continue to be very modern. Our main task is to involve as much as we can the Continental Federations and the National University Sport Federations in close cooperation with the international sports federations but also the international organisations such as UNESCO for instance. We have great resources and great traditions, I’m confident we will be successful. Developments in sport and technology are rapidly occurring and one of the biggest challenges we face is ensuring good governance across all FISU’s operations and increasing the relevance of FISU amongst students around the world. These are two of my immediate priorities as FISU President. I am very grateful to Claude-Louis Gallien for his guidance when I was First Vice-President.”

The new President has been involved in the development of student sport for over 15 years. The 51-years old Matytsin is from Moscow and has an academic background in physical education and administration with a Phd in pedagogical sciences. He also holds several honorary titles such as Master of Sport (table tennis) of the USSR as well as a doctor honoris causa at several universities. He is a former rector of the State University of Physical Culture, Sport and Tourism and is the current President of the RSSU, the Russian National University Sport Federation. He has been the Head of Delegation of Team Russia at the Universiades since 2005 and is currently the Vice-President of the Organising Committee of the 2019 Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk. He’s also the author of more than 70 scientific works such as monographs, didactic materials etc.

 About FISU
Founded in 1949, FISU (International University Sports Federation) is an organisation dedicated to university sport and the promotion of excellence in mind and body. Balancing elite sport competition and academic studies, the student-athletes participating in FISU events are today's stars and tomorrow's leaders. FISU has three core sport properties: the Summer and Winter Universiade and the World University Championships. The Summer and Winter Universiade are international multi-sporting and cultural festivals held every two years, gathering student-athletes aged 17-28 from over 170 countries. FISU's other major sporting events are the World University Championships (WUC), single-sporting events which are held in the years between the Universiades. In 2016 there will be a total of 34 Championships in 25 countries. In addition to our existing broadcast agreements, FISU's long-term multimedia partnership with Eurosport will bring live HD broadcast for each Summer Universiade and Winter Universiade across Europe and Asia-Pacific and greater exposure for all FISU properties through the monthly TV magazine CAMPUS. FISU's partnerships with Eurosport covers all events through 2017. The 2017 editions of the Universiade are in Almaty, KAZ (winter) and Taipei City, TPE (summer) and 2019 in Krasnoyarsk, RUS (winter).
