FIVB Announces Appointment of Willy Buckhardt
Lausanne, Switzerland, May 19, 2004 - The FIVB is pleased to announce the appointment of leading television industry executive Mr Willy Burkhardt as President of the FIVB Television, Marketing and New Media Commission.
Commenting on the appointment, FIVB President Dr Ruben Acosta said: 'The FIVB is honoured that a man of Mr Burkhardt's experience and reputation in the industry will be guiding our efforts to develop productive partnerships with sponsors and the broadcast media so as to give the widest possible exposure to the spectacular sports of Volleyball and Beach Volleyball.'
Mr Burkhardt has been responsible for the creation, development and launch of more than 10 cable networks around the globe and was the chief architect
of seven international versions of ESPN's SportsCenter.
For more than five years he was the Executive Vice President in charge of ESPN International and ESPN Enterprises as well as serving as a Director of ESPN, Inc. In this role he agreed an important partnership between ESPN and the FIVB to cover major Volleyball competitions including the Men's World Championships in Buenos Aires 2002.
He then took on the role of President and Chief Operating Officer of Wicks Business Information, a leading database, event and information provider in the financial and general management arena. The primary components of the business were sold to Dow Jones, Inc. in March, 2004. He is now a leading Television Industry Consultant.
His first involvement in the television industry was as a leader of McKinsey & Company's media and entertainment practice in California and then as an operating executive at Turner Broadcasting Systems and then ESPN Inc.
He received a B.A., with honours and high distinction, from Stanford University and an MBA, with high distinction, Baker Scholar, from Harvard Business School.
