Five Australian Motor Racing Championships to be on Seven Network

Motor racing - 25 Feb 2003

FIVE of Australia's most exciting and popular motor racing championships, organised by PROCAR Australia, will be televised on the national Seven Network this year.

The Nations Cup, GT Performance, V8 BRutes, Production Car and Formula 3 Championships, which comprise the eight-round PROCAR Champ Series, will air in 32 regular Saturday afternoon shows while Seven also will return with a doubled committment as host broadcaster of the international Bathurst 24-Hour race in November.

The PROCAR Champ Series will visit tracks in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and Queensland with more than 120 regular competitors, in cars ranging from Ferraris and Lamborghinis in Nations Cup, to road-based utes and performance touring cars in the V8 BRutes, GTP and Production Cars, to international single-seaters in Formula 3.

Seven's coverage helped make the inaugural Bathurst 24-Hour an instant classic last November and the event is expected to attract more than 55 entries from Australia and around the world this year.

The agreement with the Seven Network delivers PROCAR fans, competitors and sponsors the most significant regular television coverage to date, according to PROCAR Australia Deputy Executive Chairman John Cowley.

'We're absolutely delighted to have reached this deal with Seven. Joining a major free-to-air network will lift our five championship series to a new level of visibility and expand our fan base considerably,' Mr Cowley said.

'Generally, it will be a huge boost to PROCAR's development and after the success of Seven's coverage of the inaugural Bathurst 24-Hour I can't think of a better organisation to partner us in this growth,' Mr Cowley said.

'Seven viewers will be able to enjoy a total of 40 hours' coverage of Australia's best and most diverse motorsport, while PROCAR and its competitors will benefit from working with the network that really pioneered touring car coverage on Australian television.

'I am especially pleased for competitors and sponsors. This is the news many were waiting for in order to finalise their plans for the season and I'm confident that as a result we'll see strongly-supported fields throughout the season, as well as a growth in sponsorship in every area.'

The Seven Network schedule will feature one-hour shows each for all rounds of the Australian Nations Cup Championship, Australian GT Performance Championship and V8 BRute Series and combined one-hour shows for the Australian Production Car Championship and Australian Formula 3 Championship.

The telecasts are expected to start on Saturday 29 March with round one of the Nations Cup from the Clipsal 500 meeting in Adelaide, which will be staged the previous weekend.

Seven has doubled its commitment to the Bathurst 24-Hour on 21-23 November to eight hours of live coverage.

The network's telecast of last year's race, hosted by Mark Beretta, was a major success, out-rating coverage of an Australia vs England cricket match on another channel and attracting almost 50 percent of all commercial viewers in Sydney and Brisbane on Sunday afternoon.
