Golf Worth £7bn to UK Economy
Speaking at the recent World Scientific Golf Conference, Stephen Proctor, Managing Director of Sports Marketing Surveys Ltd presented the first ever estimate of the contribution that golf makes to the U.K. economy.
The figure of £7 billion takes into account expenditure on equipment, Golf Green Fees and memberships, tourism, travel, course construction and media spend to arrive at a direct spend total of £3 billion - which is then recycled once or more within the UK, to generate the total £7 billion contribution.
Golf is followed by 12,000,000 adults in the UK, and with some 3,500 hours of coverage is the second most televised sport.
The nations golfers also spend between 300 & 400 million hours playing their sport - equivalent to the working year of about 200,000 people.
An interesting finding is that the industry also contributes in excess of £250,000,000 in Central and Local Government taxes - but receives almost no funding in return.
