Haiti Earthquake: FEHSU Pulls Through Rather Well
It has been two weeks since the terrible tragedy hit Haiti. As it was obvious from the world media the country’s capital Port-au-Prince was totally destroyed by the earthquake and hardly any information made it out of the country.
Just recently, the FISU Headquarters has received some news regarding its Member Federation FEHSU, the National University Sports Federation of Haiti. Although the situation in Port-au-Prince is bleak, FEHSU, the FISU Member, pulled through rather well.
The members of the FEHSU Executive Committee came out alive of the powerful earthquake that struck the country last January 12th. The two Vice-Presidents were abroad at the time of the devastation. The Treasurer, Jean Aurel Olympcy, lives in the Northern part of Port-au-Prince, an area especially spared by the earthquake. Its President, Michel Dossous, survived the collapse of his university center. As for the Secretary-General, Erby Beralte, he was tens of kilometers away from the capital when the tragedy occurred.
Nevertheless, FESHU is in mourning as Professor Gabriel Raoul Berrett, the First President and founding member of FEHSU, was not as fortunate. He died in the collapse of his university center together with several other professors and students. He was 72 years old and is survived by three children and several grand children.
Although FEHSU was more or less spared in the number of human lives, it was not the same for its facilities and its work equipment. The federation is practically back to square one and will have to battle firmly to regain its strength.
In the meantime, FISU is looking into the matter how it will help its member to rebuild University Sport in Haiti.
