HRH Prince Felipe: “I’m delighted to be part of the bid and this superb team”
Buenos Aires, September 3, 2013 - “I’m not just delighted, I’m thrilled to be forming part of this project and part of a very well drilled, solid and professional team with boundless enthusiasm,” said a very proud HRH Prince Felipe, Prince of Asturias after making his arrival in Buenos Aires and taking part in the first rehearsals of the Madrid 2020 Bid presentation.
“We’re heading into the last stage now, the bid’s grand finale,” he added. “There are always things that need to be done, but we can be confident that the team have done the work they had to.”
Highlighting just some of the Madrid bid’s many assets, Prince Felipe said: “The main strength of the bid is that virtually everything is in place, with 80 percent of the infrastructures already available. That means there’s less of an effort that needs to be made. The level of popular support is also very high. Madrid is one of the few European capitals that does not have the honour of being an Olympic city, and there is no question that is an important point for the people of Madrid.”
He added: “The Olympic Games represent a wonderful opportunity for any city and Madrid is now faced with a magnificent opportunity both for itself and for Spain, which needs the kind of boost that the Games can provide. We are hopeful that Madrid can make this bid a successful one and we are very excited too.”
Prince Felipe and the rest of the Madrid 2020 team face four whole days of rehearsals and working meetings as they continue with their efforts to convince the members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), who will this Saturday elect the host city of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“Though there are still things to do, we must be confident,” he said. “We need to finish the job off, keep on talking to the IOC members, highlight all the good things Madrid has to offer and also bear in mind the need to keep working hard until the very last second. The presentation is a very important and valuable part of the process: it is the finish line and we need to keep giving everything we have right up to the last metre.”
Prince Felipe ended by saying: “The Olympic Games are a great opportunity, the biggest global showcase there is, and would represent a tremendous boost at a time at which Spain is badly in need of one. Madrid deserves it, for all the effort it has put in, for its perseverance and for its commitment, which is not just for one bid but looks to the future and the long term as well.”
