ICC CWC 2007 Spotlight Shines On North America
ICC Cricket World Cup West Indies 2007 Inc. will this weekend bring the New York cricketing community up to date on progress towards hosting cricket’s most prestigious tournament.
Accepting an invitation from ICC CWC WI 2007 Inc. director, Ambassador Julian R. Hunte, to discuss the Event with interested parties in the USA, ICC CWC 2007 Managing Director & CEO Chris Dehring will address a town hall meeting in Brooklyn at 7 p.m. tomorrow (Friday June 2, 2006).
The public forum, which will be held in the school auditorium of St. Mark’s Church on President Street, will feature a presentation by Dehring and will be followed by a Question & Answer segment.
Members of the CARICOM Grouping of Consuls General, persons of Caribbean descent as well as representatives of the American cricketing fraternity are expected to attend the meeting at which the ICC CWC WI 2007 Inc. official will deal with various topics. Among the areas he will discuss are Ticketing (particularly for the North American market), the commercial opportunities to be derived from the tournament and what part Caribbean nationals in the USA can play.
“The Caribbean Diaspora in the United States has a massive interest in this historic Event and it’s our duty to ensure we include our brothers and sisters up north in what’s happening. Many of them have long signalled their intentions to attend the tournament next year. We felt this was a priceless opportunity to connect with them – especially at such a pivotal time with the launch of Public Ticketing last month – and that it should not be missed,” explained Dehring.
He reminded that the USA is also home to thousands of migrants from other cricket-playing parts of the world such as England, India and Pakistan and that many of them are likely to travel to the Caribbean for the tournament next March and April.
“We have already seen evidence of the level of interest in the USA. It continues to register the second-highest number of ticket applications under the Public Ticketing programme. In addition, five American travel companies have signed up as Official Travel Agents (OTAs) for Cricket World Cup so there is clearly a lot of buzz in the USA about this Event,” he added.
On Saturday, Dehring will join ICC CWC WI 2007 Inc. Chairman and West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) President, Ken Gordon, as well as Chairman of the WICB Cricket Committee and former West Indies captain, Clive Lloyd, in a meeting with members of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Canadian Cricket Association and the USA Cricket Association (USACA).
This will involve wide-ranging discussions, including plans for the West Indies-India One-Day International series this summer and how that undertaking can be utilised to help promote next year’s ICC Cricket World Cup.
