Ice Legacy Already Started – Salzburg 2014 is Pleased to Welcome Europe's Figure Skating Youth

Figure skating - 22 Jan 2007
300 Skaters from 15 countries competed at the Mozart Cup 2007 for 5 to 19 year-olds in the Volksgarten in Salzburg, one of the planned locations for Salzburg 2014. Salzburg 2014 Games Plan Director Gernot Leitner is very pleased that the Mozart Cup 2007 is, for the first time, associated with the traditional “European Criterium" tournament.

Salzburg, which is already one of the top locations in Central Europe for ice hockey, is making its mark in the international figure skating arena by hosting the Mozart Cup 2007. This can also probably be linked to the increased popularity of figure skating in Austria.

The participants in the Mozart Cup have proven over the last 5 days how high the level of figure skating is in Europe in the youth categories. 16-year old Severin Kiefer from Salzburg, one of Austria’s biggest talents in figure skating and junior state champion, is inspired by the experience. "It is very special for me to skate in the Mozart Cup here in Salzburg in front of my home crowd. Of course it would be a dream come true to participate in the Olympic Winter Games 2014 in my hometown. And when I talk to the other athletes who are here from all over Europe, I get the impression that they like Salzburg too, both the presentation and the smooth organisation."

Gernot Leitner, himself a former professional athlete, is likewise very pleased with the event: "The Volksgarten, in the centre of our beautiful city, has offered during the Mozart Cup a very high level of skating. This Cup shows Salzburg’s strong commitment to promote figure skating. If Salzburg receives the honour of organising the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2014 there is a very strong basis here to build on. It makes me particularly happy to see how many young and talented Austrian skaters were in the line-up. The majority would have the right age in 2014 to take part in Olympic Winter Games here in Salzburg should Salzburg have the honour to host the Games."
