ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships 2013 in Denmark will be Truly Sustainable
This weekend Denmark hosted the ICF Canoe Marathon World Cup and thus tested the “truly sustainable” set-up that will be carried out in full scale next year at the World Championships.
The slogan “Truly sustainable” is in focus when planning and carrying out the two events World Cup 2012 and World Championship 2013 in Denmark.
José Perurena López, President, International Canoe Federation, previously said that environment is an integrated part of the canoe sport. Denmark and the Danish Canoe Federation follow it up with actual and truly sustainable initiatives in the event set up.
This weekend the World Cup in Denmark was thus a warm up for the World Championships next year also in terms of testing the truly sustainable elements.
“Truly sustainable is about environmental issues and concerns. At this World Cup we are focusing on drinking water and also waste and sorting of waste. All the participants receive drinking bottles that they can refill as the Danish drinking water is clean and pure. The drinking bottles have a QR-code which links to additional information on drinking water and recycling,” says Peter Engel, The Danish Canoe Federation. Peter Engel is responsible for the “Truly Sustainable”.
Some of the main ideas for reducing the potential environmental impact from the two events are:
• No visible waste in the regatta area: It should be easy for both participants and spectators to see where and how to deposit waste. The standard is very high for both sorting of waste, and for regular cleaning of the surroundings. To the benefit of both humans and nature
• Common transportation for all participants: To the highest possible degree, the participants and their teams get common transport from their accommodation to the regatta area. This will help to minimize air pollution and reduce the amount of CO2
• Food and beverage: Food and drink will be served and offered in the regatta area based on locally and regional produced products. As far as possible, the products will be certified as organic.
• Water from local quality source
“Any activities regarding sustainability will be experienced as a positive surplus by both participants and spectators,” explains Peter Engel.
Based on the experience from the World Cup, the World Championships in 2013 will comprise even more environmental issues. Further the event is expected to be planned and conducted according to the international standard ISO 20121 on event sustainability management.
”We see good perspectives in the environmental focus and the Truly Sustainable concept that is being carried out by the Danish Canoe Federation this year as a test event for next year’s World Championships,” says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark.
The ICF Canoe Marathon World Cup 2012 and the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships 2013 are staged by the Danish Canoe Federation. The municipalities of Gladsaxe and Lyngby-Taarbæk, Wonderful Copenhagen and Sport Event Denmark partner the event.
