Incident at the Olympic Bobsleigh and Luge Track at Cesana Pariol on the 30th November 2005 Competition
The FIBT released the following preliminary public statement regarding the accident that injured German head coach Raimund Bethge during training at the Olympic Bobsleigh and Luge track at Cesana Pariol on the morning of November 30th 2005.
On the morning of November 30th during the official training session the experienced German Head Coach, Raimund Bethge was struck by a bobsleigh driven by the Australian Women’s Team
As with most sporting accidents this one was a concatenation of circumstances and no fault be attributed to anyone person or institution. In particular the Australian women’s team, the members of which were understandably shaken by the incident, were in no way responsible for its occurrence.
As with all accidents, FIBT experts are conducting a full and detailed enquiry. The FIBT will be providing TOROC and IOC with their findings and a list of any recommendations that may come from them. The purpose is to assure that all operational and medical procedures and protocols are in place and fully implemented to ensure the highest levels of safety before, during and after the Olympic Games.
Mr Bethge suffered fractures of both legs.
FIBT Medical Officer Dr David McDonough has informed Raimund's friends and colleagues that the injuries are not of a serious nature in medical terms, and that Raimund can be expected to recover in good time.
All concerned praised the competence, compassion and consideration of the medical team that treated Mr Bethge at the Italian hospital.
