International Sailing Summit Extends Industry Support As New Connect to Sailing Partner

Sailing - 16 Oct 2008

Thursday 16 October 2008 - The International Sailing Summit (ISS) has become the most recent partner of the ISAF Connect to Sailing initiative.

The International Sailing Summit brings together leaders from the sailing industry to network and share ideas for promoting participation in sailing with annual summits held over the past eight years.

The establishment of the Connect to Sailing initiative was very much fostered by the Sailing Summit, who brought their voice from the industry to support an ISAF commitment to grass roots development. In response, ISAF launched the Connect to Sailing initiative in 2003. Over the past five years, Connect to Sailing has proven a valuable asset to the development of sailing around the world, most recently producing the ISAF Learn to Sail Training Programme; a "how-to" programme to aid ISAF Member National Authorities (MNAs) in the provision of a generic national learn to sail programme.

This year, on 4 December 2008, the 9th International Sailing Summit will take place in Paris, France, as a lead in to the Paris International Boat Show and hosted by the Fédération Industries des Nautiques (FIN). This year's Summit will follow the theme "Learning from the Successes of Others" with presentations from boat builders, event organizers, sailing organizations and sponsors.

Chairman of the International Sailing Summit, Alistair Murray said, "The International Sailing Summit is proud to be a sponsor of the ISAF Connect to Sailing programme. The goals and ideals of the ISS and Connect to Sailing are very much aligned, being the promotion of industry and grass roots activities to promote participation in sailing and to achieve strong and lasting foundations for the future of sailing. Our mutual goals involve attracting newcomers to the sport and maximising the involvement of existing participants."

Over 100 professionals from approximately 20 countries are expected at the 9th International Sailing Summit, bringing together administrators, stakeholders and industry leaders from the sailing community to pool resources, share ideas and network. The International Sailing Summit explores ways of developing sailing internationally, with the ultimate aim of:

Encouraging more people to simply 'mess about in boats'
Promoting sailing around the world
Focusing on the broad development of sailing
Continuing to raise industry standards

Luissa Smith, Head of ISAF Training and Development, commented, "ISAF has exchanged knowledge with the International Sailing Summit over recent years and we are delighted to now welcome ISS on board as a Connect to Sailing partner. Our objectives are the same and our shared goal is to enable grass roots development programmes around the world."

About Connect to Sailing

Connect to Sailing is a global initiative led by ISAF to increase participation in sailing. With a focus on youth, Connect to Sailing is based upon grass roots activities to achieve strong and lasting foundations for sailing programmes. It aims to expand and develop participation in sailing by attracting newcomers to the sport and retaining both newcomers and existing participants.

About the Connect to Sailing Partners

The International Sailing Summit joins Rockley International, Laser Performance, Hobie Cat Europe and Hyde Sails as Connect to Sailing partners.

Rockley International is one of the leading providers of sail training in Europe, with seven activity centres across France and Great Britain. Laser Performance is the largest dinghy manufacturer in the world and is particularly well-known for the production of the popular Laser dinghy, used at the Olympic Games since 1996. Hobie Cat Europe builds boats and equipment for sailing, kayaking and fishing, and is best known for the Hobie multihull and the so called 'Hobie way of life'. Hyde Sails, founded over 40 years ago, produce 30,000 sails every year for boats of all shapes and sizes.
