IOC Executive Board Wraps up Discussions

Olympics - 19 May 2004

The Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) concluded two-and-a-half days of discussions in Lausanne today.

The meetings were marked yesterday by the acceptance of the Candidate Cities to host the Games of the XXX Olympiad in 2012, namely Paris (FRA), New York (USA), Moscow (RUS), London (GBR) and Madrid (ESP). Commenting on the decision, IOC President Jacques Rogge said: 'We are pleased with the decision that was reached through a unanimous consensus. We congratulate the Candidate Cities and thank the Applicant Cities for their hard work and enthusiasm. We look forward to a fair and exciting competition.'

Earlier in the week, the EB met with the International Olympic Summer and Winter Sports Federations and the Council of the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF). Special emphasis was placed on the fight against doping and the IOC's desire to have all International Federations sign the World Anti-Doping Code before the Opening Ceremony of the Athens Games.

On the medical front, the EB approved the consensus proposed by the IOC Medical Commission setting out the conditions to be respected for a person who has changed sex to take part in sports competitions. These conditions will be applied starting from the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad in 2004 in Athens, and can be found on the IOC website: www.olympic.org.

The EB also accepted the report provided by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) on the pending USOC doping cases but stressed that this acceptance was based on the rules in force at the time of the violations, and that doping cases should be handled in strict compliance with the World Anti-Doping Code in the future.

On Games preparations, the EB heard the report by the President of the Athens Organising Committee (ATHOC), Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, and her team on the latest progress. The Athens Coordination Commission Chairman Denis Oswald confirmed having witnessed this progress at first hand during the 12th and final Commission visit to Athens last week. The EB also received an update on the preparations for Turin 2006 and Beijing 2008, and heard the first report by the Chief Executive Officer of the Vancouver Organising Committee (VANOC), Mr John Furlong, via video conference.
