IPC President Sir Philip Craven Pays His First Official Visit to Moscow
The IPC President and Russian officials discussed the development of the Paralympic movement in Russia and the Government’s focus on improved accessibility for athletes with disabilities. Sir Philip toured a number of newly-built Paralympic training facilities and reviewed innovative techniques used by Russia’s Paralympic coaches in training athletes with disabilities.
The Paralympic Movement in Russia has experienced significant success over the last few years. Currently, 20,000 people with disabilities participate in sport and 1,200 sports organizations for athletes with disabilities exist in the country. Since the year 2000, the Government’s financing of events in support of the Paralympic Movement has increased seven-fold. At the Torino 2006 Paralympic Winter Games, Russia’s team came first in the medal table, with 33 medals, 13 of them gold.
