ISF and Back Softball Now on Facebook

Softball - 09 Jul 2008

Social Networking Pages Aim to Broaden Sport’s Global Footprint

PLANT CITY, FLORIDA – The International Softball Federation and the Back Softball campaign just became a part of one of the largest online networking sites, Facebook.

While logged in to their username, Facebook users are now able to interact with the sport’s world governing body and Back Softball, the Olympic reinstatement campaign. Each has its own page and will be maintained regularly with updates, events, photos, and more. Visitors to those pages are welcome to become ‘Fans’ of the ISF and Back Softball. In addition, interaction with other softballers is encouraged, via discussion boards and posting users’ thoughts on the message walls.

“The online community has grown exponentially over the years, just like the participation in softball as well as the great numbers of spectators and viewers our sport has worldwide,” said ISF President Don Porter. “Many of our athletes alone have personal pages on Facebook and surely there are scores of other players, coaches, umpires, administrators, parents, and fans on there too. It’s a logical progression for us to expand our Internet presence by setting up these pages on one of the World Wide Web’s largest social networking sites.”

The Back Softball page is aimed at educating its visitors on the situation concerning softball not being a part of the 2012 Olympic programme and the ISF’s continued efforts to get women’s fast pitch softball reinstated for the 2016 Games.

“We are proud of our internationalsoftball.com and backsoftball.com websites,” Mr. Porter added. “However, establishing a presence on Facebook allows us another opportunity to get in front of people that may not have seen one or both of our official sites yet.”

The ISF page on Facebook (www.facebook.com) shows what is being done for the sport around the world. It’s set up to regularly inform fans of international softball tournaments and give them a chance to get involved in their own way.

The ISF is the world governing body of the sport as recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF). Softball (women's fast pitch) made its Olympic debut at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. There are 130 affiliated countries in the ISF and millions of participants in the sport worldwide.
